Brittany Garneau : Mobilized for the future

It was during her training in civil engineering at Polytechnique that Brittany developed a strong interest in the extent of the impacts of climate change on the field of engineering and the solutions that engineers could provide to environmental, social and economic issues. After an internship in 2019 at gbi, Brittany joined the team as a CPI. Since 2022, she has been working in the sustainable development team where she focuses mainly on projects targeting sustainable building certifications such as LEED® and WELL. Her desire to deepen her knowledge led her to take various training courses in sustainable development, particularly on green building design and adaptation to climate change. She also obtained the professional accreditations AP LEED C+CB and PA WELL, thus strengthening her credibility in the field of sustainable development. With this expertise, she is starting a master's degree in environment at the University of Sherbrooke in the fall of 2024.

Can you share with us a professional achievement that you are particularly proud of since joining gbi?

« I am particularly proud of having contributed to the (upcoming) LEED® and WELL certifications of the gbi HUB in Repentigny. It is not every day that we have the chance to be our own client and to directly see the impacts of our work in our daily lives. »

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

« In 5 years, I see myself still working in sustainable development by working to find solutions to the challenges brought by climate change, contributing to projects that have a positive impact on society while minimizing their impact on the environment, raising awareness among various stakeholders about these issues, and continually trying to do better. At the same time, I see myself participating in training future professionals, either through teaching or training. »

What does being a woman in engineering mean to you?

« Currently, there are only 15% women engineers in Quebec, but that’s almost 4 times more than 30 years ago! I feel like the engineering field is no longer a “man’s job” as previous generations perceived it. I have to thank the women engineers who came before me and who paved the way for young engineers like me. During both my academic and professional career, I always felt that I had my place in the engineering field. And I hope that I, in turn, can inspire young girls to follow this path.

So for me, a woman in engineering is simply a woman who practices a profession that matches her interests and who enjoys finding solutions to complex engineering challenges.»

What character traits or skills are particularly important for success in the field of consulting engineering?

« In my opinion, the skills that are particularly important in engineering are: analytical skills, organizational skills and autonomy, the ability to communicate and popularize complex concepts, and the desire to deliver quality work.
What is beautiful about the field of consulting engineering is that there are a variety of positions that correspond to different character traits. For example, there are positions for managers, designers, site supervisors, and project coordinators. Everyone can find what they are looking for. »
