Building on a child’s scale

We are proud to maintain a trusting and excellent partnership with the Centre de services scolaires des Mille-Îles (CSSMI) and are happy to highlight the process of creating and executing an innovative project like building an elementary school with two videos: “On a Child’s Scale” and “The Expertise Behind the Project.”

In November 2020, the CSSMI’s Domaine-Vert-Nord school opened its doors to staff and students. This new type of school is decidedly innovative, with architecture that allows for teaching areas that are adapted to various teaching and learning methods. This layout favours interaction and community spirit and offers easy access to outdoor spaces. In addition, the facilities are flexible and designed to be adapted to the activities and the occupants.

Built with children in mind, Domaine-Vert-Nord is a revolutionary school that sets an example for the learning environments of tomorrow. In collaboration with the consortium of DKA Architectes, Yelle Maillé et associés architectes inc. and Yves Woodrough Architectes Inc., gbi’s mechanical and electrical engineers have incorporated the best systems to ensure occupant comfort.

The project includes the following features:

  • The concept of shared space between adjacent classrooms allows for subgroup work, as needed, and flexible layouts.
  • An environmentally responsible building, which is a candidate for LEED® V4 Gold certification.
  • Natural light in the classrooms to benefit from the documented effects of the sun’s wavelengths on hormonal balance.
  • Lower energy consumption than last-generation models, thanks to optimized mechanical systems and the efficiency of the building envelope.
