A unique,
high-end
academic
building

The building accommodates commercial spaces, student spaces, a medical clinic, as well as gardens and terraces. The high energy-efficient performance is due to the use of a plenum that retrieves energy from outdoor and indoor spaces for heating and air conditioning, creating a setting conducive to learning while helping the environment.

This building has five stories and two underground levels that can accommodate around sixty vehicles. In the evening, the building becomes the campus’s beacon through a unique engraving process in the glass, consisting of 500 sealed units.

Characteristics

Construction in Montreal of a high-end, class “A” building with an area of 130,000 ft2, located on the university campus.

To start with, this LEED CS design involved several components that had nothing in common with ordinary construction concepts. For example, to ensure high energy efficiency, gbi recommended the type of glass and the use of energy recovered from perimeter areas and transferred to interior areas for heating and cooling with the help of a plenum.

Finally, gbi chose to put an electrical/mechanical room on each floor, instead of installing one—very large—room for the whole building. This approach provides enhanced comfort for students and optimal energy control for each of the areas concerned, therefore optimizing energy use.
