Mobile Medical Device Reprocessing Unit (MMDRU)

At the cutting edge when it comes to techniques and processes, gbi was chosen by the CISSS des Laurentides to design a mobile medical device reprocessing unit, a first in Quebec for this type of specialized equipment.

A mobile and flexible unit

The project consisted of designing sterilization equipment to increase the capacity of hospitals that lack space for this component or to use during renovation work. The mobile aspect—the very essence of the project—is what makes it truly innovative.

A logistical challenge

gbi’s teams worked tirelessly on designing this unit, consisting of electromechanical systems and medical devices.

In order to ensure that the unit—comparable in size to a 1,600 sq. ft. single-story house—could be moved, the number of modules had to be reduced. The layout was designed to limit the amount of piping and equipment needing to pass through the joints of the mechanical room. In general, an MMDRU requires 2,500 to 3,000 sq. ft. in a hospital, whereas this one has an area of 1,600 sq. ft., including the mechanical room.

Valuable savings

The hospitals in the region benefitted greatly from the creation of this mobile unit, using it during renovations or to increase their reprocessing capacity. A sterilization unit is a critical resource in a hospital, as it is essential for operating rooms. If the unit is not functional, the emergency department has to be closed.

Last summer, on its first stop in Mont-Laurier alone, it was used to sterilize and reprocess more than 10,000 medical devices. In addition to providing flexibility for use on an as-needed basis, the unit also saves considerable money by eliminating expenses for the temporary rental of safe spaces suitable for sterilization.

It is also very advantageous from an environmental standpoint, because it will no longer be necessary to build temporary units only to tear them down afterwards.
