Place Bell

Large-scale “turnkey” project delivered in less than 28 months. Awarded the 2015 Canada BIM Council CanBIM Innovation Prize, this community gathering place allows people to engage in ice sports thanks to its two ice rinks, one of which is Olympic-sized, and to enjoy cultural events in its multi-purpose hall. This smart building has more than 10,000 seats, and can be converted into an auditorium or a convention centre.

Characteristics

2015 Canada BIM Council CanBIM Innovation Prize

Working on this design-build, fixed-price project for a 68,600 m2 building within a 28-month time frame was a real challenge. The main premises include a multipurpose hall with 10,000 seats that can be easily converted into a concert hall or an exhibition or conference space. The building contains two ice rinks: one is Olympic-sized while the other is for skating and can accommodate 2,500 people. The basement has two levels and three garage levels for a total of 2,500 parking spaces.

A unifying project

gbi’s role in this major project resembled Place Bell’s vocation as a community gathering place in that the firm managed schedule coordination for the various participants, such as architects, engineers, contractors, surveyors, the City of Laval, etc.

This project required the design of sewer, water and public utility retention; a feasibility study; and the integration of the project on a site with an uneven topography, all in close collaboration with the City of Laval’s engineering and licensing departments.

gbi’s involvement

gbi worked on the following project phases: topographical surveys of infrastructure; preliminary studies; concept and preliminary designs; final plans and specifications; construction supervision; and infrastructure integration assistance.

Working together to envision tomorrow’s world.

We believe in our employee’s ability to help us create a world rooted in our values of continuous innovation, responsible management and sustainable development.
