The Verdun Borough commissioned gbi to prepare plans and specifications for the construction of a new beach on the St. Lawrence River and to carry out supervision work. The project stems from the Verdun Strategic Plan, which aims to create a complete family-centred living environment and enhance the shoreline.
This highly politicized project that drew criticism from citizens had a very tight schedule, as the budget came from grants for Montreal’s 375th anniversary. In addition, the construction of a play area over a former landfill site caused additional complications, not to mention the complexity of working in water during winter.
The project involved land excavating and grading, including soil decontamination; sand fill for the development of a swimming area; constructing a dike to reduce the current and an underwater rip-rap wall to contain the sand; developing the shoreline with sidewalks, low walls, stairs and a slab for a future library and beach huts; building a climbing wall and an all-purpose water access ramp; connecting the water supply for the showers; moving an outfall; and planting berry bushes.
