This is a unique sports centre, with its layering of an underground ice rink and a park at ground level. The project was awarded the Mérite Ovation Municipale at the Union des Municipalités du Québec Gala thanks to its innovative concept. Land-use optimization is a current issue in Montreal, which gbi was able to respond to with this LEED-NC Gold certified design.

The world’s first underground sports centre
This project, which received the Mérite Ovation Municipale from the Union des Municipalités du Québec, was designed for LEED-NC Gold certification and was subjected to energy simulation: 16 LEED points. It is worth noting that energy consumption was 52% lower than the Model National Energy Code for Buildings (MNECB) requirements.
A world first for ice sports!
The centre includes: two standard-sized ice rinks, one with bleachers with a 300-person capacity; 13 changing rooms, including 10 team changing rooms, one for women and two for referees; as well as all the technical and service spaces. The City, which aimed to minimize the visual impact of the new complex in the park, requested that the part of the complex comprising the two ice rinks and its associated spaces be underground, which left a large surface area to be devoted to green spaces in the park.
A fully equipped centre
In addition to the ice sports facilities, the centre also contains the following amenities: outdoor swimming pools, outdoor tennis courts, multi-use rooms, a youth centre, administrative offices, public spaces, and parking for 86 cars.
