Upgrading to standards of the City of Montreal’s traffic lights
After participating in the mandate to upgrade 632 traffic lights from 2004 to 2007 in Montreal, gbi is once again taking part in the mandate obtained in 2008 to bring some 600 traffic lights up to standard.

Mandate description
The gbi team carried out analyses and prepared the traffic light plans.
The new standards of the Quebec Ministère des Transports, de la Mobilité Durable et de l’Électrification des Transports regarding traffic lights required changes to the City of Montreal’s traffic light equipment. The City accepted the challenge of modifying a large number of its traffic lights, and was able to take advantage of the opportunity to update certain signalling elements to increase user safety, improve traffic flow and ensure effective traffic light operation in the future.
A major project for everyone’s safety
Among the services provided by gbi were:
- Implementing Transport Québec’s new standards regarding the operation of pedestrian lights;
- Studying intersection safety and developing solutions to resolve safety problems;
- Ensuring the visibility of traffic lights at intersections;
- Reviewing intersection layouts to ensure the safety of all users;
- Improving flow in the existing network;
- Analyzing current and future traffic conditions using Sychro/SimTraffic simulation software;
- Preparing PL, SL, BC, MA, BL (Microstation) plans according to City of Montreal’s standards;
- Adding measures to add cyclists to traffic light programming;
- Adding traffic signal preemption for public transit vehicles and audible traffic signals.
